Many people want to do the moving themselves but are unsure exactly how to pack all of there items for moving. Believe it or not, there is a right way and a wrong way to pack. Here are a few tips to get the most out of your packing.
When you pack the right way, you use less boxes and less packing material. It also means less trips to the truck when loading and unloading.
Take a walk around your home and make several lists of things that you will need boxes for. Things such as books, small appliances, linens and bedding, items from the bathroom, kids toys and various other items. When you are ready to start packing boxes be sure not to overload the boxes and make them to heavy to lift. Just because you have a certain size box does not mean you have to fill it to the brim. It is better to have several lighter weight boxes than one box that takes two people to lift.
When packing glassware such as fine crystal and fine china use bubble wrap not packing peanuts. Packing peanuts are good to use to secure items when they once they are wrapped in bubble wrap but not good to use alone. If you use packing peanuts by themselves they become dislodged and the results will be fine crystal and china banging together become cracked, chipped or even broken. Always be sure to use bubble wrap for dishes, glassware or anything else that is fragile.
When packing books put smaller books in once box and larger books in another. This way you do not over load the boxes. Bigger books weight a lot more than smaller books. You may even want to put a few smaller books in a bag and save the boxes for other items.
For items in your bathroom be sure to check all caps on bottles making sure they are tight before packing them into the boxes. To make your first night in your new home easier, place the toiletries you use everyday such as a toothbrush, toothpaste and deodorant in a baggie and keep it with you. This way you are not hunting around for the toiletries box to get what you need for the night and the next day.
When packing clothes, again put a clothes aside you may want to wear that night and the next day then pack the rest. You can buy wardrobe boxes that come with a plastic rod you can place inside the box. This way you can take clothes off the rod and place them on the rod in the box. When finished all you need to do is tape up the box and your done.
Be sure to mark all of your boxes with the contents and what room it goes into. This way as you are unloading the truck you know exactly where all the boxes go. It also saves time when unpacking the boxes as well. For example, you may not want to unpack all of them and want to put some in storage.
